Session 1 - Introduction and Discussion on Leading Animal Research Compliance Programs

Presenter - Eugene Matullo, MS - Founder, ARC Seminar Series, EM3

Summary - In this session, Eugene provides an introduction for the series and then discusses the NIH Cap on Indirect Rates. Eugene shows a video on indirect rates which provides historical context and then opens discussion with the participants through the use of polls. After the discussion on indirect rates, Eugene presents on the topic of leading animal research compliance programs with a focus on the 4Cs: Competency, Collaboration, Communication, Character.

Session 2 - MOUs - Getting into the Weeds

Presenter - Lauren Dandridge (Assoc. Dir. IACUC/IBC/PAM, Princeton)

Summary - In this presentation Lauren discusses the requirement for MOUs between collaborating institutions when animal work is being conducted. She touches on the regulatory requirements, the recent language change to the FAQ, provides scenarios to consider, and contrasts the difference with IIAs.

Session 3 - Nuances to Crafting a Non-compliance Policy

Presenter - Smita Chopade (Director IACUC, Scripps) & Nick Van De Velde, PhD, CPIA (IACUC Administrator, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital)

Summary - The meeting covered various aspects of animal research compliance and noncompliance management, including roles and responsibilities, key regulations, and strategies for enhancing compliance. Participants discussed the importance of creating effective noncompliance policies, implementing corrective actions, and fostering a culture of care and accountability in research institutions. The conversation ended with discussions on balancing enforcement and client service roles, the significance of flexible guidelines, and the importance of sharing successful strategies within the research community.

Session 6 - Developing as a Professional (and a human) in ARC Roles.
